Hello from the Hawk’s nest!

This has always been my affectionate reference to my home, maybe even more so now that ‘home’ has taken on some unusual connotations in today’s world. What used to be a place solely of solitude, rest and family now doubles as home offices, classrooms and, as we’ll see, courtrooms. In many ways, we’re coming to rely on the walls of our homes to safely provide a space for all our own needs, as well as those of our families and our communities. Home is now, in several ways, our safety nest. 

As court personnel, working from home has probably never seemed like an option for you. But, as we learned from NCSC’s Jim McMillan in last week’s webinar “Justice Knows No Quarantine,” crime carries on, protective orders must be placed, and essential case types must be tended to. And so, here you are – upholding justice from your living rooms.

I know you can’t see me but I, as are many of the people depending on you, applauding the court’s unwavering commitment to the public.

Like you, ImageSoft is also adjusting. Just last week, we replaced our quarterly company luncheon, in which I give ImageSoft updates and recognize the progress of each department, with a virtual meeting. Everyone had their own lunch, and I talked into a webcam instead of directly to our team. And, much like court clerks, administrators and Judges, doing so was an experience unlike any that I’ve had in my career.

Preparing for the presentation, I couldn’t help but think back to a quarterly meeting I hosted not too long ago that was themed “The Circle of Life.” And, yes, we opened with the notorious Lion King theme song! My message was one that I think is even more applicable today – communities cycle through good times of growth and renewal, but usually not before some gloomier times of struggle and hardship. 

We are all still adjusting to this new way of the world, uncertain that the “normalcy” we took for granted will ever resurface just as it was. But that’s the silver lining – we are adjusting. With a little bit of flexibility and innovative thinking, courts are forging a path through unchartered territory to keep their virtual doors open despite the physical doors closing.

As we continue through the circle, nearing what is, hopefully, the beginning of the end, I like to think all organizations, but especially the justice community, will start building safety nests of their own. I hope we can recognize that, although many of us were fortunate to scramble an emergency plan together this time, we need to leverage this experience as preparation fornext time – when this all comes full circle. 

As you click through the perimeter of this newsletter, I ask only that you keep an open mind to the court-centric opportunities currently available to support your emergency plan efforts. Just as our homes are doubling as workspaces, many digital court solutions, such as eArraignment, eFiling, electronic workflows and other component-model tools, also double as day-to-day process enhancements and back-up strategies.

The Court and The Coronavirus

The efforts are truly applaudable.

The Court’s Administrative Offices in every state have stepped up to ensure access to justice amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, equipping courts and respective personnel with the secure, remote technology needed to continue protecting rights and hearing essential cases. Though most in-person proceedings have been suspended, virtual hearings through platforms like Microsoft Teams, GoToMeetings and Zoom, have kept courtrooms in motion.

The National Center for State Courts (NCSC) has been tracking state responses to date, which are available through the interactive map on its homepage.
